Comp Sci High Charter School

NYCR-CDE provided $15 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing to help fund the construction of a new public charter high school in the South Bronx.

The capital was utilized by Urban Assembly Charter School for Computer Science (d/b/a Comp Sci High), a non-profit offering quality education to students in the Bronx. The project involved the construction of an approximately 45,000 square foot charter school serving 505 students in the historically underserved area of Mott Haven. The project allowed Comp Sci High, previously operating in a temporary split campus space shared with the New York City Department of Education, to relocate to a permanent unified home. The new facility serves students in grades 9-12 and features 18 classrooms, small breakout rooms, computer science labs, a gym, cafeteria, and administrative space. Of the 505 students, 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Comp Sci High prepares students to access jobs in New York’s tech industry. It is a computer science-focused high school that uses the power of education, technology, and community to become an engine of opportunity and a force for economic freedom in the South Bronx. Its model involves a work-based learning program where students receive direct instruction on professional skills ranging from basic email etiquette to advanced presentation skills. Designated counselors help students participate in summer internships with leading tech and financial firms in New York City.
