George Washington Bridge Bus Station (Phase II)
A NYCRC-managed entity provided a $19 million loan to help fund the second phase of redevelopment of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Washington Heights.
Another NYCRC-managed fund previously provided a $72 million loan to assist with the first phase of redevelopment of the bus station. The second loan allowed for the next phase of work that transformed the bus station into a modern transit and retail hub. The project upgraded and consolidated bus operations and reconfigured the station to accommodate 50% more bus capacity for the station’s approximately 5 million annual users. The project also included construction work that increased four-fold the retail space within the bus station. Retail tenants include Marshall’s, Gap Factory, Citibank, PNC Bank, and Fine Fare Supermarket. The project brought new construction and permanent jobs as well as increased retail options to the Washington Heights community.
The bus station is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the nation’s largest bi-state authority. The Port Authority is implementing a strategic plan to maintain and modernize its existing transportation facilities. The goal is to ensure safety and security and to significantly improve the quality of transportation services for regional residents, businesses, and visitors. A key component of this plan was the redevelopment of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, an important New York City transportation facility.
“The project is increasing four-fold the retail space within the station, thereby bringing additional retail options to the surrounding section of Upper Manhattan.”
– Michael Francois, Former Head of Real Estate, Port Authority
