KIPP NYC Charter School

NYCR-CDE provided $20 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing for the construction of a new 155,000 square foot public charter high school in the Bronx.

The capital was utilized by KIPP NYC, one of the city’s leading public charter school networks. The funding is helping finance construction of a seven-story school in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx that will be home to approximately 1,400 students in grades 9-12. The new building will act as the permanent home of KIPP NYC’s second high school program and allow it to raise the total number of high school students it serves throughout New York City to 2,800. The new school will feature 40 classrooms; 8 state-of-the-art science labs; a full gymnasium with two regulation-size basketball courts; a 10,000 square foot rooftop play space; a learning lab with a 100-seat lecture space; as well as a dance studio, music room, and auditorium.

KIPP NYC operates a network of 18 public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, which educates students in kindergarten through grade 12. The charter school network is known for its diverse student body — close to 100% of students come from minority groups and approximately 90% of students qualify for federal free or reduced-price lunch. KIPP NYC schools boast a 97% high school graduation rate.

“KIPP NYC is excited to move forward with this project which will bring expanded academic opportunity to more children in the Bronx and will build on the incredible work of our existing K-12 schools in the Bronx.”

Alicia T. Johnson, Former President, KIPP NYC
