Neighborhood Charter School

NYCR-CDE provided $18 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing to fund the construction of a new public charter school in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

The capital enabled the redevelopment of a vacant 52,000 square foot warehouse as well as the construction of a new 6,000 square foot gymnasium. The new school is home to 620 students in grades K- 8 and run by the Neighborhood Charter Schools network. The project sought to replicate the non-profit’s school in Harlem which is one of the top performing charter schools in New York -- with particular success in serving high-functioning students on the autistic spectrum and those with individual learning disability needs. The school was constructed by Civic Builders, the nation’s leading non-profit charter school developer.

The mission of Neighborhood Charter Schools is to provide children with new educational opportunities through a rigorous, comprehensive K-8 program that cultivates the intellectual, social, and emotional development of each child. The organization’s schools are an inclusive community that serves mainstream students as well as high-functioning children on the autism spectrum.

“Great public schools with high-quality facilities are neighborhood anchors that provide access to transformative opportunities for students.”
